Let's face it, this year is no exception. We're still likely to drink a little more than we should on New Year's Eve. Drinking as much water as alcohol to avoid a hangover - we've all heard of this technique. And yet, every January 1, it's the same thing! Almost everyone wakes up soggy and with a headache. Carried away by the euphoria of the evening, we usually forget to drink something other than alcohol. That's why EdLive has come up with 11 tips to help you ward off a hangover and start 2021 on the right foot.

Peppermint

Peppermint essential oil helps relieve headaches. Apply it to the temples and massage in using small circular movements. If you prefer, you can also take it as an infusion. When drunk, peppermint peppermint soothes stomach walls.

Ginger

Thanks to its anti-vomiting properties, ginger helps counteract nausea. It's best consumed fresh, infused for a few minutes in hot water. However, avoid taking it on an empty stomach, as it can be irritating.

Baking soda

Heartburn is not uncommon after a night out. Heartburn is caused by an increase in acidity in the gastric mucosa due to alcohol-induced irritation. Baking soda neutralizes this acidity and calms heartburn. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water, then drink.

Coconut water

A popular grandmother's remedy for hangovers, coconut water is one of the best ways to rehydrate your body. Dehydration caused by alcohol leads to a drop in our calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium levels. Coconut water helps to rebalance these levels, thanks to its biochemical similarity to blood plasma.

Activated carbon

After too much alcohol, you can sometimes feel bloated. Activated charcoal is the perfect remedy. It acts like a sponge, eliminating all the toxic elements still present in the body. It can be taken in capsule form or as a powder to be diluted in water.

Tomato juice

Less often thought of, alcohol is also responsible for premature cell aging. Tomatoes, rich in vitamin C and mineral salts, help limit this phenomenon and improve cell renewal.

The banana

Bananas are an excellent hangover remedy. Rich in potassium, it reduces digestive problems and nausea. Plain or in a smoothie, it's up to you how you prefer to eat it.

Savoury coffee

As old as time itself, this remedy may be off-putting because of its taste, but it is highly effective. Coffee helps to shake off that lethargic after-party state, and reduces aches and pains such as headaches. As for salt, it has a sponge effect, absorbing any alcohol residues still present in your system.

Rosemary

Rosemary improves blood circulation, helping to stop headaches. In addition, as an antioxidant, it helps to eliminate certain toxins released by alcohol. Steep a few sprigs of rosemary for several minutes in a glass of hot water.

Honey

In the aftermath of an evening out, honey is a good ingredient to soothe your stomach. Rich in fructose, it boosts energy and facilitates the elimination of alcohol from the body. On toast or in your infusions, don't skimp on honey.

Eggs

Eggs are an excellent source of vitamin B, helping to combat hangovers. They also contain cysteine, which eliminates acetaldehyde from the body, a toxin secreted by the liver after ethanol is transformed. Soft-boiled, fried, scrambled or in omelettes... don't hesitate to eat eggs in all their forms.

To recover quickly from your hangover, it's important that you rest to make up for your lack of sleep, and that you stay hydrated throughout the day. What's more, contrary to what you might think, it's best to eat light, healthy foods that aid digestion, as opposed to fatty, industrial products that will upset your stomach even more. So get out of McDonald's and say hello to vegetables and fruit!
